After 70 years of captivity in Babylon, God’s people returned to Palestine. Ezra and Nehemiah relate the struggles of God’s people as they returned and restored their homeland. The book of Esther tells of a beautiful Jewish woman who became queen and then risked her life to save her people.

of the book reflects the conditions and attitudes of Jews scattered in Persia, rather than those of pious Jews in the Holy Land. Additional arguments for the authenticity of Esther are its accurate knowledge of Persian customs and its use of many Persian words. Examples of this will be noted at various points in the commentary.
